Hopenhagen LIVE might be packed with activities during the 12-day climate summit, but that’s no reason not to turn your culture hungry eyes towards the rest of Copenhagen. The city’s largest cultural institutions are all decked out in climate camouflage, exhibiting world-class art and culture in order to join the debate and add their comments on global heating and sustainability. save himalayasSummiteers Summit to Save the Himalayas will bring in mountaineering luminaries form Nepal and around the world to Copenhagen to jointly call for the attention of the global community to focus on the perils of climate change in the Himalayas, a global heritage. The program will be organized as an accompanying event of the fifteenth conference of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change to celebrate the International Mountain Day on December 11, 2009. Mountaineering icons, marching in summit gears on the streets of Copenhagen, will be joined by many mountain lovers in issuing a declaration to save the Himalayas from the impacts of climate change.

The program starts at 11.00 on Christiansborg Slotsplads and at 11.30 there will be a peaceful march to Kongens Nytorv and back. Between 12.30 and 13.30 there will be speeches and entertainment on Christiansborg Slotsplads. Several Nepalese Ministers and the Danish minister for development, Ulla Tørnæs, will be present together with world famous Mountain climbers including the world record holder with 19 climbs to the summit of Mount Everest.

Illumenarts / Glowing Climate
While the diplomats iron their shirts for the upcoming COP15, Glowing Climate opens the doors to a festival in the city district of Ørestad. Experience a unique light and media exhibition shown on water, land, house fronts and inside buildings in the cityscape of Ørestad. With humor, poetry and provocation the artists deliver a comment to the ongoing and urgent climate debate. The exhibition contains artwork by aspiring as well as established Nordic artists.

The exhibited artists include: Hilden & Diaz, Karoline H. Larsen, Johnsen & Nielsen, Jari Haanperä, Bojen & Ørum, Thorbjørn Lausten, Thomas Lindvig, Steven Scott and Jens Galschiøt.Glowing.

The festival is also packed with parties, debates, tours and a climate run.

Vor frue plads

On the edge of the climate
DanChurchAid presents the exhibition ”People on the edge of the climate” on Frue Plads in Copenhagen. Photographer Mikkel Østergård and journalist Malene Haakansson have captured situations from the daily life of two families in Uganda and Ethiopia for whom the climate changes are already very tangible.

Christiansborg slotsplads

The World First – Humans First/ Global Day of Action
On Saturday December 12.
You are invited to join a global demonstration.
GCCA, a broad coalition of climate and environmental, peace, solidarity and developmental organizations will bring together all those who are in favour of a more ambitious, socially minded and globally fair climate agreement.

The demonstration will begin at the Danish parliament on Christiansborg’s slotsplads and proceed out to Bella Center, where the climate summit takes place. On the same day, manifestations such as this will take place in close to 100 countries around the world under the title of Global Day of Action.

Climate Bottom Meeting – Windows of Hope
Workshops, rituals and a funeral a day. The Climate Bottom Meeting views itself as the public alternative to the Climate summit. The Climate Bottom Meeting includes people and contributions from all parts of the world. There will be a considerable line-up including lectures, workshops and cultural activities such as music, films, dance, rituals and exhibitions which together present a broad and collective view of the climate debate and the issue of sustainability.

At the Climate Bottom Meeting, each day has its own theme with workshops, presentations and a funeral – an aspect of the industrial way of life, which we must put behind us if we are to stabilize the climate for the long term and re-establish a sustainable presence on Earth.

Co2 Cubes – Visualize a Tonne of Change
How much space does a ton of CO2 take up? About as much as a three storey building. And that is exactly how much each person in an industrialized country on average lets out into the atmosphere per month. You will learn this and much more in a multimedia exhibition at Sankt Jørgens lake and the Tycho Brahe Planetarium. Via the exhibition you can both physically and virtually participate in the global debate about how we can reduce the CO2 emissions.

The Confederation of Danish Industry invites all the people of Copenhagen inside the large Forum building to a light green experience which will educate you in an entertaining way. Vor frue kirke_Ty StangeInternational sermon
Sunday December 13 an international and ecumenical sermon will be held in Copenhagen’s cathedral. The Anglican archbishop Rowan Williams will preach for among others Her Majesty Queen Margrethe II and Archbishop Desmond Tutu. The sermon is held in English and will end at 3pm where the church bells will toll 350 times for awareness, hope and action – together with the rest of the churches in Denmark and the whole world.

Arctic Tent
There is no other place in the world where climate change is more apparent than in the Arctic region. During the month of December scientists, representatives of the region’s indigenous people, political leaders, artists and adventurers will pop in for a visit at the WWF’s tent on Nytorv and give their view and story about one of the world’s most endangered regions.

See a photo exhibition and a giant ice sculpture, experience films and lectures about the Arctic, the world’s wildest place.

Climate forum 09
All of Copenhagen is invited inside the sports arena “DGI-byen” for an inspirational conference with a program that offers culture, debate, exhibitions, lectures creative workshops, films and music, created by and for people from all the continents.

28 Danish environmental organizations have organized the conference with contributions from authors, scientists and internationally renowned cultural figures. You can also participate in the daily climate briefings, where you, in a down to earth way, can gain insight into how the negotiations are developing in the Bella Center.

Kunstindustrimuseet

Trash-formed
With a common interest in illustrating how art and design can contribute in reducing the strain on the environment, designer and cultural entrepreneur Klaus Samsøe, designer Victoria Ladefoged and communications consultant Caroline Vogelius Wiener have come together in the art and design group “re:Something” and have given form to a number of objects made out of recyclable material.

The exhibition Trash:Formed tells the story of the development process of trash into a new product.

We are constantly bombarded with global warming from all sides, and now the turn has come to communication. CO2 is created each time you send an e-mail, check your profile on Facebook and make a call on your cell phone. Should we go offline to save the earth? Luckily not. The Danish Postal Museums special exhibition tells you why.

Warning: The exhibition can cause bad consciousness and moral dilemmas. In return you will receive a number of good advices which can reduce your own CO2 communication usage immediately without having to go offline.

On a bike in Copenhagen
The Museum of Copenhagen hosts an imaginative exhibition about bicycles seen from all kinds of angles. Follow the bicycle’s history in Copenhagen from kick-bike and penny farthing to the present day custom built bikes, carrier cycles and city bikes. From spectacular entertainment and toy to irreplaceable everyday tool.

The exhibition also offers beautiful old fashioned bicycle models, bicycles in the art, music, literature – and in the busy every day life of people in Copenhagen.

Denmark has not always been grey and wet. The exhibition ”Denmark from ice age to future” contributes to the climate debate with exciting knowledge about how Danish weather and climate has changed over the ages and why. The exhibition also takes a sneak peak into the future.

Indians of the Rainforest
The exhibition ”Indians of the Rainforest” follows Venezuela’s Indians in the forest, on the rivers and in their community houses. Come to the exhibition and learn about the natives’ close bond to nature and go exploring amongst necklaces of animal teeth, blowpipes with poison darts, hammocks and much more.

Indigenous peoples’ day – about indigenous people and the climate

Kongens nytorvUnderstanding Climate Change from Space
Since 1975 scientists and engineers have been working on creating a European space program. The result of their efforts has among other things helped create the satellites which today play such a vital role in our understanding of the changes to our Earth.

Under the climate summit you can experience at Kongens Nytorv a model of an ESA CryoSat-2 satellite in actual size. The satellite will be sent into orbit in 2010 on a mission to monitor the polar ice. The satellite has an impressive degree of accuracy and can therefore help to determine some of the climate changes that will affect future generations

Cool Globes
Cool Globes is an outdoor art exhibition, which spreads out across the whole city with 28 decorated globes. Each globe is decorated by a Danish or international artist and all of the globes carry messages, that point to possible ways of bringing down the CO2 emission levels.

Seal the Deal! Klimalabyrint
See the renowned Hard Rain photo exhibition which has been created by the help of Bob Dylan. Find you way through the climate labyrinth and make your voice heard by signing the UN’s global petition ”Seal the Deal!”

The walls of the climate labyrinth are made by hundreds of banners which have been stamped and signed by thousands of worried citizens all over the world.

Climate change(s) people’s stories
The French Embassy, The European Environment Agency and The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts focus on climate changes in the photo exhibition ”Climate change(s) people stories”. The exhibition can be seen both on the facades of the three institution’s buildings as well as inside The European Environment Agency. The exhibition is created by The Collectif Argos photographers.

On December 8 the climber Antoine Le Menestrel and his team of Lézards Bleus will perform the climbing stunt “Service on all levels”, where they focus on the individual in relation to the monumental.

The gallery ”Kunsthallen Charlottenborg” will display a magnificent exhibition created by Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain. Large video installations explain the consequences of globalization and climate change and investigate the meaning of migration in a time where great migrations of people will take place.

KLIMA – The world is changing
In the Machine Hall and the Kettle House – two historic buildings in the Botanical gardens – the Natural History Museum presents a new big special exhibition in the newly reopened exhibition halls.

A hungry polar bear, whitened and dead corals, bird species that leave – and arrive to – Denmark, and four fantastically glowing globes are just a few of the many beautiful and amazing pieces, illustrating the change occurring to our world.

The exhibition is produced by the American Museum of Natural History in New York in co-operation with a long line of other world renowned museums, including the Natural History Museum of Denmark.

RETHINK The Implicit
Exotic birds crow in the brush, while insects buzz energetically in the lazy atmosphere. The Swedish artist Henrik Håkansson highlights elements in nature, which are usually taken as a given, under the theme “RETHINK The Implicit” at the Centre of Contemporary Art. Together with five other artists he focuses on the resources, we have thus far overlooked – until the climate changes created a focus on the basic phenomenons of nature, which we risk loosing, such as water, air, land and light.

RETHINK Kakotopia
A mouse with a screaming yellow security helmet races into hiding from a shower of acid rain. The artist and CEO Bill Burns travels around the world with miniature versions of human safety equipment – for animals. Under the theme of RETHINK Kakotopia, which is exhibited in Nikolaj, Copenhagen Contemporary Art Center, the Canadian and twelve other artists contemplate the new values and visions that might occur in a possible chaotic future due to the climate changes.

Nordatlantisk Brygge

The North Atlantic wharf is literally dressed to focus on Greenland, the Arctic and the global climate, when an art exhibition transforms the building into a giant iceberg. Inside the beautiful old warehouse there will be three separate exhibitions each with their own focus on the climate changes in the northern regions.

Acrtic climate changes is a window into the future’s climate. Danish and international premiere scientists  supply the newest findings on climate change in the Arctic – and their significance for the world.
